“Why Do We Give Talks?: The Art and Science of Effective Communication” – Workshop, LIGO Academic Affairs Council Tutorial Session, LIGO-Virgo Collaboration Meeting, March 2015
I developed a science communication seminar based on my experiences with RELATE and Portal to the Public, and presented it at the LIGO collaboration meeting. This presentation targeted early-career scientists, with an audience of undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. Topics covered included techniques for effective technical presentations, development of visual aids, and elements of presentation style.
A recording is available to members of the LIGO-Virgo collaboration here.
Portal to the Public Fellow in Science Communication, Detroit Zoo, Royal Oak, MI, 2014-2015
As a Portal to the Public fellow, I developed an interactive demonstration of general relativity and gravitational waves. I presented this demonstration at Scientist Days throughout 2015, explaining gravitational waves to zoo visitors from 3 to 93.
RELATE workshop, Ann Arbor, MI, 2014
As a pilot participant in the RELATE workshop at University of Michigan, I developed two versions of a public talk on gravitational waves and detection, “Listening to Black Holes with Lasers”. One version was designed for public performance and was presented at Arbor Brewing Company in Ann Arbor, MI, as part of the Science by the Pint Series. The other version was recorded as part of the first RELATE video series; watch it below!
